We started learning about money today in math! Some students have math homework that they did not finish at school. Please ensure they complete it this weekend!

We had 2 more puppet shows today. In one show, the main problem was that the animals were fighting about food. In the other, a baby arctic hare was lost!

There is no school tomorrow for students.

Thank you to the parents who have volunteered for the Glenbow Museum field trip. We just need 1 more volunteer!

Today we did a science challenge! Aquaman needed a new waterproof suit! We tested out materials and found out what was waterproof and what was not waterproof. We tested:
-tin foil
-paper
-cotton balls
-fabric
-felt
-plastic bag

We had to apply 4 drops of water to each material and then observe whether the water absorbed, drip through or sat on top.
Ask your child what would be a good material for Aquaman to use!

Today we learned more about vowels. We learned there are babysitter vowels that tell a previous vowel to say its name! For example, boat, coat, cockroach, approach, goal, coal.

We learned a new math game that you can play at home. All you need is 8 little things. Ask your child how to play!

Today we saw 2 puppet shows. One was set in Saskatoon and one was set in Iqaluit. The main problem in the story from Saskatoon was that the main character, Baby Kisses, got lost from her mom.
The other main problem in the other story was that a polar bear's home was getting destroyed by melting.

We watched a video about life in Iqaluit. We learned the sun sets at 3:00 pm in the winter! It looked so dark. The schools did not have that many windows. Their pipes are above ground! The high school held a winter market where people could go by stuff. The frozen ocean can be used as a highway for snowmobiles. They just got their first Tim Hortons!

We observed the snow that we collected and put on the heater! The snow melted and there was less millliliters!

We have a field trip to the Glenbow museum on February 27th. Please email me if you can volunteer!

Today we learned what situations require getting an adult assistance and which we can handle ourselves.
We also had a math problem and we are working on using pictures that help us solve the problem.
We went outside to collect some snow to help us answer our science journal question of "How much water is in snow"? We have put the containers over the classroom heater and we will make our observations tomorrow.
We are ready to perform our puppet shows! See some pictures below.
There is no school on Friday for students.

Today we learned more of what water can do! We dropped water onto regular paper towel and observed that it got absorbed. When we dropped water onto wax paper, it  didn't stick and it rolled off! Also, when we applied 2 drops and pushed them together, they stuck together.
We also learned that ducks have an oil on their feathers that lets water roll off so they don't stay wet. Seals also have an oil on their fur, so that water rolls off and they don't stay wet.

Today scholastic orders are going home. If you wish to order, please have your order in by Thursday January 30th.

We had our visit from Arctic in the classroom yesterday. We saw a lot of artifacts and had to guess what they were made of and what they were used for. Ask your child about some of the things they saw.

The students have a spelling quiz tomorrow. Please have them practice their words.

We will have a new science journal question tomorrow. Please send in your child's science journal.

Today we were learning about water. We did an experiment that helped us answer the question:
Can water stick to itself?

We discovered that water can stick to itself. We observed that it made droplets, before it fell into the container.

Tomorrow we are having our Arctic in the classroom presentation.

Our puppet shows are nearly complete!

This week we are learning about the properties of water. Last week we learned that water has low viscosity, which means that water flows easily. Today we learned that water takes the shape of whatever container it is poured into. See some pictures below!

Today we also did an experiment. We filled a glass to the very top with water. I asked the students how many pennies I could add to the cup before the water flowed over the sides. The whole class, Ms. Watts included said less than 10 pennies. I told anyone who guessed over 70 pennies, that it was a silly guess. Well, to our surprise we added 72 pennies before the water flowed over the side! We made some observations that the water formed a "wrap, seal, skin, protective cover" as it got more and more full.

Water is a pretty interesting liquid!

Dear parents,

We are looking forward to some warmer temperatures next week. Hopefully the students will get a chance to get outside this weekend!

Today we got a chance to read with our buddies.

Unfortunately our Arctic in the Classroom presentation yesterday was cancelled. We are working to find a day to reschedule!

The students have a new Science Journal question to discuss with you!

Have a great weekend!

Tomorrow we are having a presentation in our classroom called "Arctic in the Classroom". We are looking forward to this guest speaker who will teach us more about life in the Arctic.

Today we starting the construction of our puppet show settings.  We have enough boxes now and thank you to those who sent in supplies. The students are using packing peanuts, tiles, boxes, tin foil, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, styrofoam, clay, paper and bottle caps.

We had a Key Jar where the students had to describe their perfect day.

In Math we started to use borrowing in subtraction. When we don't have enough ones, we can borrow from the tens spot.

Tuesday, January 14, 2020

Today we practiced subtracting bigger numbers using base ten blocks. Ask your child to show you what we learned today.

We went to the ilab and got our supplies we need to make our puppet shows.

A group of students from room 1 did a performance today. It was about a teddy bear castle! We will have more performances coming up!

We learned about natural resources. A natural resources is something you use that some from nature. We look into what resources Iqaluit, Saskatoon and Meteghan has.

This morning in writing we used our 4 senses to describe the setting for our puppet shows.

Monday, January 13, 2020

Today in math we were working on subtracting by counting back or counting forward. We used our fingers to help us. A LOT of students did not finish in class. Ask your child if they have homework tonight. Please complete this homework with your child and return it to school tomorrow.

The students in room 1 have new spelling lists to practice. The quiz is on Friday.

This morning we practiced describing our characters for our puppet show stories. We still need large boxes to make our setting, please send them in!

Today we learned about viscosity. Ask your child what won the liquid race and which liquids have high viscosity and which have low viscosity.

Thursday, January 9, 2020

The students in room 1 have a new science journal question for homework! Some students are missing their science journals, so please have a look at home for them!

We are starting our plans to make our puppet show settings. See some examples below.

Wednesday, January 8, 2020

The students in room 1 are creating a puppet show. They are going to be making the setting for  their story and we are in need of large boxes to make our settings. If you have any large boxes at home, please send it in with your child.

The students also wrote out a list of supplies they will need to make their setting. Please ask your child what was on their supply list and if you have any items at home, please send them in.

Tuesday, January 7, 2020

Today was a busy day in Room 1.
The students are going to be working on making puppet shows about a community in Canada they have been learning about. The characters in the story are the animals they have been researching.
Today we got in our story writing groups and decided what the main problem of their story will be.

We have been talking about what is expected during group work. We found out that group work goes well when we listen to the ideas of others, take turns talking, are open minded and flexible in our thinking. One thing we need to work on is using inside voices.

Today in math we practiced using expanded form to add large numbers. We discovered that if we know 8+4=12 THEN 80+40= 120! You just add a zero.

This afternoon we had a mystery object in our mystery bag. Ask your student what was in the bag!

We also researched some of the provincial flags. Ask your child about the flag of the province they have been researching and what the symbols and colours represent.

Today we learned how to add larger numbers without stacking. We used expanded form to help us add.

We also started learning about the states of matter. We learned about solids, liquids and gases and how the particles in each are arranged.

We also learned about New Year Resolutions. We talked about each setting a goal and how we are going to achieve that goal.

There is no school on Friday for students.
