Happy Halloween! Today we sketched a pumpkin. We also finished our witch leg art! We had a Halloween parade with the whole school so we could see everyone's costumes.

We cut open some pumpkins and we all had a turn to take out some seeds and guts. We made some observations about how the insides of a pumpkin felt. It felt gooey, soft, slippery, mushy, slimy, wet and sticky! Ask your child how to spell pumpkin!

No school tomorrow for students.
Our zoo field trip is November 6th. I am still waiting for student forms.
Please let me know if you can volunteer for November 19th to Arts Common.

Today we learned that out of all the liquids we tried to freeze, water froze first! We learned that the thick liquids did not freeze quickly.
As you can see from the graph, most of the class thought water would freeze first.
We wonder why the milk and apple juice did not freeze as quickly as the water even though they were runny too.

Please have your child return their spelling words and home reading tomorrow!

No School Friday.

Yesterday we had a question:
Why does the liquid in a thermometer move up when its hot and move down when its cold?

We learned 3 words today to help us understand. 1. Expand 2. Contract. 3. molecules/particles.

Ask your child to explain why the liquid in a thermometer moves up and down depending on the temperature.

We also learned what the word "optimal" means. Have your child give you an example of something optimal and not optimal.

The room 1 students have spelling words for homework in their home folders. They must practice their words and return the list on Thursday when they will be quizzed. Each student has their own list.

On November 6th we are going to the Zoo. Please email me if you can volunteer at kawatts@cbe.ab.ca

We had a wonderful morning at Prince's Island Park. We saw a lot of animals. We think we saw a catfish because it had whiskers. One group saw a dead animal and we think the predator was a wolf, coyote or bobcat. We also saw a baby hawk. We saw some pigeons. We also saw animal tracks.

We recorded our observations using tally marks.

Wednesday, October 2, 2019

The weather will be about 7 degrees Celsius and sunny tomorrow. The students will need to wear a jacket and rain boots or winter boots.

We went outside and measured temperature again today. Ask your child how warm it was in the sun.

If you have any cardboard to spare, please send it in with your child.

Tuesday, October 1, 2019

Today we used thermometers to help us measure the temperature inside and outside. We measured the temperature in the sun and shade and snow. We measured the temperature inside our classroom and by the heater. Ask your child what temperature the thermometers below show.
We learned that in Canada we use the standard unit of measure called Celsius. That is named after a scientist named Anders Celsius.

We read a book called Mindset Matters. We learned that our brain believes what we tell it and we  read a poem called "Yet". Ask your child what the poem was about.

Please remind your child that if they would like to take books out of the ilab, they must bring their ilab bags to school.

Also we will be doing a project with cardboard. If you have any cardboard donations, please send them to school.

Our field trip to Prince's Island is this Thursday morning!
