Dear parents,

In room 1 we are working on writing new stories. We have started the story plan and created our main characters. Ask your child who their main characters are and some of their character traits. This is in preparation for our trip to the Apple Store where we will be using technology to help our story writing.

Today in Social Studies we learned more about some of the plants and animals that we can find in Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. We also learned that Alberta's provincial flower is the Wild Rose.

We also read an Inuit tale called the Polar Bear Son.

In Health we have been talking about what responsibilities are. We have discussed how we have responsibilities at school, at home, and to the earth.

Dear parents,

We had a guest speaker from Green Calgary come to teach us about water. We got to make a community and then we learned that sometimes things like gas, paint and fertilizer can get into the water because when it rains, things get mixed up.

We still need 2 volunteers for our morning field trip to Hull's Wood on March 10th.

The students in room 1 have new spelling words this week.

The students are getting an opportunity to work with a photographer during the next few weeks. Half of our class got to work with the photographer today.

We have our field trip to Glenbow museum this Thursday. Please make sure your child packs a good lunch and lots of snacks. We are always extra hungry on field trip days!

Dear parents,

The students in room 1 have a spelling quiz tomorrow. Please have them practice their words tonight.

Today Mrs. Ramsay came to our class to teach us about farming. We learned all about the process and what each piece of equipment does. She taught us about how farmers plant the seeds, water them, harvest the crops and where the grain is stored. Next week she is going to teach us about what happens to the grains next and how we make bread! Thank you to Mrs. Ramsay for joining our class today!

Tomorrow is fun snack from Around the Bend pretzels.

We need 2 more volunteers for our morning field trip to Hull's Wood on March 10 from 9-12.

We need 1 more volunteer for our morning field trip to the Apple Store in Chinook on March 17th from 9-12.

On Monday we are having Green Calgary visit our classroom to teach us about water filters. There was a notice sent home about this yesterday.

Dear parents,

This morning we continued to work on making inferences about our mystery object. We had to describe the sound our object made when we shook the container. That was a qualitative observation.
We used onomatopoeia to describe the sounds. We heard "click clack, rattle, sizzle, splash, swoosh, tick tick, plink, clink, bonk".

We checked to see if our mystery object had magnetic properties. We applied what we knew about metal sticking to a magnet to help us make our inference. We learned that copper is a metal that does not stick to a magnet.

After we made observations and applied what we knew, we made an inference! Ask your child what their mystery object was.

We read a book called Seven Blind Mice. There was a mystery thing in the book. Ask your child what the mystery object in the book was. It helped us understand that to  made a good inference we have to look at the "whole" thing.

We did some Valentine's art today.

Dear parents,
Today we have been learning about making inferences. We learned that Dr. Xargle, the alien from the book we read made some strange comments about babies. For example, he thought that babies are patted and squeezed after feeding to stop them from exploding! He also thought that they are dusted to stop them from sticking from things! He made some observations but his inferences were incorrect  because he doesn't really know about babies.
We learned that scientist can sometimes be like detectives. They make conclusions based on their observations and what they already know.
We all got a mystery sample and we are making some observations. We will then make an inference about what the mystery object is.

There is no school Thursday and Friday this week due to Teacher's convention.

Our Valentine Exchange is this Wednesday afternoon.

Dear parents,

Tomorrow is fun snack from Cobs!
We read a book today called Say Something. Ask your child what we learned.

This week we have been working on making observation. We learned that some observations describe and some measure (qualitative and quantitative).
We read a book about an alien professor who has made some observations about human babies. He came to some interesting conclusions. We had some word cards based on the book that we had to sort into categories. Then the students were told they could only sort the cards into 2 categories. See some examples below:

Dear parents,

We are learning to work with money in math. We have been learning the value and name of each coin.

Today in science we learned there are 2 kinds of observations, qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative observations describe an object and quantitative observations measure an object. We learned that when we make quantitative observations, we always use a unit of measure like centimetres or grams.

We have enough volunteers for our field trip to the Glenbow Museum on February 27th.

We have another field trip to Hull's Wood in Fish Creek park on March 10th. This will be a morning field trip from 9:00-12:00. If you are available to volunteer, please let me know!

The students in room 1 have new spelling words this week.

We will be having a Valentine Exchange on Wednesday February 12th. I will be sending home a class list with student names. If your child is doing Valentine cards, please ensure there is one for each member of the class.
