Today we organized our data from Fish Creek into a graph and we could easily see which animals we saw the most and least on our field trip.

We also used a printing detective sheet with our writing. Ask your child what the printing detective sheet helped us with.

We read a story called Mwakwa Talk to the Loon for Orange Shirt Day.

Today we did the Terry Fox Run. Terry Fox wanted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. He was 18 when he got cancer. We run the Terry Fox run to remember what he did and to keep the tradition. Maple Ridge has raised over $1000 dollars so far! You can continue to bring money next week.

We learned Terry Fox has 3 special characteristics:
COURAGE
DETERMINATION
COMPASSION

We read the book Bubble Gum brain today to help us understand DETERMINATION. We talked about mindset and how our brain believes what you tell it. We also learned about a magic word----YET!!

Please remember to have your child do their home reading (RED folders) and return the books next week.

Dear parents,

We had a wonderful morning in Fish Creek! Thanks to the volunteers who made this trip possible. The weather was amazing and the students observed many animals who live in Fish Creek. We are now sorting the data we collected to we can see which animal we saw most of in Fish Creek.


We have our Terry Fox run tomorrow. The weather looks wet so have your child dress appropriately. We will be participating in the run regardless of the weather. The students can bring a "toonie for Terry" to donate tomorrow. 
Today your child will be send home with their new RED (Read Every Day) home reading folder. They each have 2 or 3 books that they should read and return next week. If the level your child has been given is not suitable, please make a note on the recording paper.

Please send back field trip forms for next week ASAP.

Dear parents,

Our field trip to Fish Creek is scheduled for tomorrow. The weather is looking rainy, so we are deciding after school today if we are going to go tomorrow or re-schedule for next Tuesday.

There are new field trip forms going home today for our field tip to Prince's Island park next week.

Today we did measuring with our stuffies. See attached pictures.









Monday, September 23, 2019

Today we talked about the Fall Equinox. We talked about how the days will be getting shorter and we notice signs of Fall.

We also measured ourselves using Ancient Egyptian units of Measure. We used the palm, digit, cubit and span. When we measured we always remember to use a number and a unit. Ask your child how tall they were using the Egyptian units of measurement.

On Wednesday the  students are asked to bring a stuffy that they can carry easily to help us with our measuring!

Today we finished our Dot Day art. We added details to our painting. We wrote all wrote about something we are scared of, but we are going to try anyway.  Ask your child what they wrote about.

We talked again about having optimal conditions for making observations and went outside to practice again.

Today we did more work with Dot Day! We worked on a painting that was based on a dot. Tomorrow we will finish our art and they will be ready for parent -teacher conferences! Make sure you book your time with Ms. Watts.

Today we went to our Observation Spot. We learned what works and what doesn't work when we make observations. Talk with your child and find out what makes an optimal observation spot.

Today we finished our book How Big is a Foot. We found out how the King can make a bed big enough to fit the Queen. Ask you child the solution!

Today we celebrated International Dot Day! We read the book The Dot and 10 Black Dots.
This afternoon the students got to visit other grade 2 classrooms and do a variety of activities around Dot Day.

We are started our science unit on Hot and Cold Temperatures this week.

In Math we started reading a book called How Big is a Foot. There was  a problem with the Queen's bed. Ask your child what happened!

Today we made playdoh. The ingredients were flour, water, salt and food colouring. It is in your child's backpack.
We read The Juice Box Bully and it was about filling buckets and standing up for others.
We still need some volunteers for our morning field trip to Fish Creek on September 26th. 2 more spots are available. For our field trip on October 3rd we are going to Prince's Island and we still need 2 more volunteers.

Next week Thursday is early dismissal and no school Friday due to conferences.

Today we went outside to observation spot.
We also played mystery object. We are learning to ask good questions.
We are learning to represent numbers in different ways such as tally marks, base 10 blocks, adding, subtracting, dice, number line and pictures.

Tomorrow is early dismissal at 12:30.
Don't forget to book a time for conferences next Thursday and Friday!

Tomorrow we are going to do something messy. Have your child wear clothes that can get dirty.

Today we learned about making observations. We use all our 5 senses when making observations!
We used a tool to help us make more detailed observations. Ask your child what that tool was and what we drew 3 pictures of.

Bookings for parent teacher conferences starts tomorrow at 7:00 am. Conferences are next week on Thursday from 3:30-7:30 and Friday from 8:00am until noon.

We still need some volunteers for our morning field trips on September 26th and October 3rd.

Our class is organized into table groups. Today group 2 and 4 got the most points and they got to use the exercise bikes!

We had picture day today!

We learned last week that scientists ask questions. Today we started learning about how to ask good questions. We played a game called mystery object. The students had to ask good questions to find out what the mystery object was!

We are reading the book My Father's Dragon. The main character, Elmer has a backpack full of supplies. Ask your child what he has in his back pack!

Our first field trip is on September 26th in the morning to Fish Creek Park. We are also going again to Prince's Island Park in the morning on October 3rd. If you are free and have your security clearance, please email me to let me know if you can volunteers.

Today the students in room 1 were put into groups. They are working hard to get points for their groups. They get points by working quietly.

We finished our self portraits. We read the book Ada Twist the Scientist. We talked about what scientists do and each student wrote a passage about why they are scientist. You can see their work at the open house tonight!

Don't forget to stop by for ice cream!!

Today your child has an envelope in their backpack. Please look inside and complete the forms and return anything required back to school.
 Monday September 9th is picture day! Please send your child to school ready for class pictures.

Today we started a self portrait. We will finish them in time for the open house tomorrow, which is from 5:00-7:00.
Also we learned that we each have a "bucket". Ask your child about how to fill a bucket.
On Friday's school is dismissed at 12:30.

Today was the first day of grade 2!
It was a fantastic day. We read the morning message and did calendar.
We played Around the World in math and we found the value of our names.
This afternoon we used playdoh. Ask your child what they made out of playdoh!
On Thursday from 5:00-7:00 Maple Ridge school is  having an open house. You can visit your child's classroom and stop by the gym for ice cream!
